DJIA surpassed 40,000 for the first time in history last week, but failed to stabilise above the mark on Monday, closing 196 points or 0.5% lower at 39,806. Nasdaq achieved a new high of 16,823, its 9th new high of the year, driven by NVIDIA (NVDA.US) , and closed 108 points or 0.7% higher at 16,794. S&P 500 closed nearly flat, up 4 points or 0.1% at 5,308.
NVIDIA, which will announce its 1FQ results Wednesday afternoon, was one of the boosts to Nasdaq's breakout as the stock lifted 2.5%. Micron (MU.US) closed 3% higher after Morgan Stanley upgraded its rating. Qualcomm (QCOM.US) and Broadcom (AVGO.US) rose more than 2% and 1% respectively.
Apple (AAPL.US) shares closed 0.6% higher after the company reportedly implemented a steep discount on iPhones sold in China.
The US Fed will release the minutes of its meeting from 30 April to 1 May this Wednesday.
