Universities and research institutes in China recently acquired NVIDIA (NVDA.US) AI chips, which the U.S. banned from being exported to China, through dealers, Reuters reported.
Tender documents, cited by the report, showed that 10 Chinese entities acquired server products made with NVIDIA's most advanced chips from Super Micro Computer (SMCI.US) , Dell (DELL.US) and Gigabyte, after the U.S. expanded restrictions on chip exports to China on 17 November 2023. The U.S. prohibits NVIDIA and its partners from selling advanced chips to China, including through third parties.
The report also said that 11 of the sellers involved were nameless Chinese distributors, and the report was not possible to tell whether the products in question were stockpiled prior to the expansion of export restrictions.
